MAy's Butterfly:

Meet Licia Priest

I was a young teenager when I came to Maryhurst, and I was not interested in having anyone tell me what to do, when to do it, or how to do it.  I was used to getting my own way.  While at the time I did not appreciate it, I later understood that it was because the staff cared about me that they placed such limits on me.  I learned to value many things that I had taken for granted.  Like many of the girls who were in the program when I was, I did not fully understand what Maryhurst meant until I was an adult and had more perspective.  I would definitely tell the staff then and now that your work is very valuable.  You are making a difference in young lives that will affect those lives for years to come.

I have been very blessed in my life.  I try to live out my faith in everything that I do.  I am a professional artist and have found great satisfaction and pleasure in this.  My art reflects my identity and my interests.  I try to pass on my love for art to others as a way to deeply express themselves.  I very much enjoyed a recent opportunity to work with several of the Maryhurst girls on a project that was displayed at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft.  The girls in my group clearly showed signs of having been hurt in life, but it was a joy and a privilege to get to reach out to them – to listen and talk with them as they helped me create a beautiful piece of art.

Thank you, Maryhurst, for caring for me at a point in my life when I didn’t even know that I needed that.  You planted seeds in a young girl that eventually took hold and will forever be a part of who I am.
